Career Bridging Program

What is it?

The Career Bridging Program (CBP) consists of four weeks of classroom training, followed by eight weeks of volunteer work placements.

You will need to be able to commit to attending this program full-time for its duration.

When is it?

There are four intakes of CBP per year. This year classes will take place;

  • September 2021

  • November 2021

  • February 2022

  • April 2022

Classes take place Monday-Friday from 9:00 am- 1:30 pm and run for four weeks.

Our next Career Bridging Program Session will begin on January 31st, 2022. Apply soon, only 18 participants will be selected for the session.

Eligible participants can avail the benefits of Provincial Training Allowance (PTA).

Career Bridging Program

This program was developed to aid newcomers with professional backgrounds in their transition into the Canadian workforce. When entering the workforce in a new country newcomers must learn a new workplace culture and set of employment laws, bridging programs are here to help prepare students for this transition. The in-class portion of this program covers the Canadian application process, financial literacy, Canadian workplace culture and Canadian employment standards. The class includes a computer skills/business certificate component as well.

In-class training consists of:

Week 1: the online application process, resumes, cover letters, aptitude testing, reference checks, Canadian workplace culture and the norms to expect in Canadian workplace environments.

Week 2: workers' rights and responsibilities set out by the Ministry of Employment Standards, the SK Human Rights Code, health and safety in the workplace as well as employee manuals.

Week 3: financial literacy including deductions to expect on paychecks, taxes in Canada, student loans and more Canadian workplace culture.

Week 4: networking and interview skills, small talk, more Canadian workplace culture and soft skills

Program Highlights

  • Individual learning plans to identify career goals and any added training needed

  • Alignment with the Canadian workforce and its requirements, Workplace experience placements (work-terms)

  • Skills training and targeted academic training

  • Workplace safety and culture (in-class)

  • In house trainers, external mentors, speakers with presentations on various employment-related topics

  • Computer training and online certificate component(s)

  • Financial literacy

Volunteer Work Terms Overview

This program matches students with eight-week work placements in their field. The volunteer work terms are specifically matched to each student's background and skill-set. Students will work closely with the employment liaison to find a work-term, which will be completed following the class.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Accessible to all newcomers to Canada (focusing on, but not limited to, newcomers within the past 5 years), ages 18 and over, who experience barriers to employment
  • English language requirement CLB 4-7
  • Must be a Permanent Resident, have a valid work permit, or a new Canadian Citizen
  • Legally authorized to work in Saskatchewan


Career Bridging Program

At Regina Open Door Society we offer an educational, professional training program for newcomers to Canada.  This program is sponsored through the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training.

Through this program, we partner with local employers who accept a volunteer with international professional experience for an unpaid work term at their site.

In the past, CBP participants have completed work placements in: administration, human resources, IT, personal care work, finance, education, marketing, and radio communications roles!
